Description

Troopers of an Australian light Horse Regiment fitting their PH (Phenate Hexamine) helmets and tucking the ends into their collars as they participate in a gas drill in their camp lines. Pith helmets and slouch hats lie on the ground at their feet. In the Middle East, the Small Box Respirator replaced the PH helmets in late 1916 as it provided superior protection against gas.
