Private Anthony Meixner, A Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), armed with a Minimi light machine gun, provides security for Bombeiros (East Timorese firefighters, out of picture), as they attempt to put out a major fire lit by feuding gangs in Calico, near the Old Market area of Dili. Civil unrest had followed initially peaceful protests against the government, and continuing violence, looting and arson have disrupted Dili. The Australian Defence Force's (ADF) peacekeeping mission is to assist in restoring calm and stability to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. Approximately 2500 ADF personnel, led by Brigadier Michael Slater, have been deployed on Operation Astute. The first elements of the force arrived the day after the request for assistance was received from the government of Timor Leste.
