Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant James Cant, 19th Battalion, of Newcastle, NSW. A mining surveyor prior to enlisting on 1 October 1915, he embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Suevic on 11 November 1916. He was killed in action on 3 May 1917, in France, aged 34.
