Sweetheart Brooch : 2/25 Battalion
A die-struck brooch with a boomerang surmounted by a representation of the rising sun badge. On one side of the rising sun is an emu, on the other is a kangaroo. The rising sun badge is enamelled red behind the crown and blue behind the lettering on the scroll which reads 'Australian Commonwealth Military Forces'. Positioned over the top rays of the rising sun is a small enamelled colour patch of 2/25 Battalion. There is a pin fastening on the back of the brooch along with the scratched name 'L Burns'.
The history of this brooch is unknown. However it is an example of commercially produced 'sweetheart' jewellery from the Second World War. Often worn by female relatives and/or a girlfriend or wife, the brooches were a symbol of pride, support and affection for a loved one serving in the armed forces. They could be purchased by the women themselves or given as a gift by the serviceman concerned.
