Studio portrait of F1359/14 Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Sidney John Davies, Electrical Artificer 3rd Class, RAN, of South Fremantle, WA. CPO Davies was born in Collie, WA, in 1916 and was an electrical fitter by trade. In 1933 he joined the Fremantle Division of the Royal Australian Naval Reserve as an electrical artificer, and then on 4 September 1939 he enlisted with the Royal Australian Navy. He began serving on HMAS Sydney later that month. CPO Davies was one of 645 men who died when HMAS Sydney was lost with all hands after a battle with the German cruiser HSK Kormoran on 19 November 1941, off Carnarvon, WA. Davies was 25 years of age.
