Bombardment of Tarakan Island, Borneo, 30 April 1945
Description
Depicts a view across the bay from Sadau (Pelak) Island towards Tarakan Island, off the coast of Borneo. On the horizon Tarakan is being bombarded and two explosions and smoke are visible. There are several small planes in the sky and several ships in the harbour. Francis John Papworth (b.1915) enlisted in December 1941 and served with the 2/4 Commando Squadron in Borneo, Tarakan and Buna during the Second World War. He was Intelligence Sergeant with the 2/4 Commando Squadron and was also a soldier artist, producing illustrations for 'Salt'. He was discharged in November 1945.
