Studio portrait of 3497 Sapper Gilbert Stanley Young, 6th Field Company Engineers, dressed in Naval Reserve uniform. A carpenter of Sandy Bay, Tas, he enlisted on 14 August 1915 and sailed aboard HMAT Ceramic from Sydney, NSW, on 24 November 1915. He was killed in action, aged 22, on 17 September 1917 at Westhoek. He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
