Trench art shell case vase : HMAS Shropshire
Description
Trench art vase made from a 2 Pounder shell case. The mouth of the case has been flared to produce the vase effect and the case once had a gilt finish which is wearing away. The body of the case is engraved with 'H.M.A.S. SHROPSHIRE -2-9-45-' and a map of the Tokyo area. Named features on the map are 'FUJI SAN', 'TOKIO', TOKIO WAN', YOKOHAMA', NOJIMA ZAKI' and 'CHIBA'.
History / Summary
This shell case was engraved to commemorate the formal surrender of Japanese forces which took place in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. It is believed to be associated with Cecil William Holmes, RN possibly RNZN.
