Description

Multi-coloured machine chain stitch embroidered, appliqued and painted Souvenir of Palestine on a black velveteen ground. The design includes a King's crown, appliqued synthetic fabric crossed Union and Australian blue ensign flags, embroidered and painted leaves with appliqued synthetic fabric pink and pale blue flowers, and embroidered images of Haifa, the Mosque of Omar, Rachel's Tomb, Bethlehem and David's Tower. 'Souvenir of Palestine' is embroidered around the top of the dome of the representation of the Mosque of Omar. The embroidery is lined with calico.

History / Summary

The history of this embroidery is unknown, but it is typical of souvenirs purchased in Palestine by Australian troops and to send home as gifts. This embroidery was found on a stall at a Church fete in Sydney.
