Description
Rice paper map of Peking from the Boxer Rebellion, 1900-1901. The map depicts the walled city fortifications of Peking where the Boxers and approximately 25,000 Chinese Imperialist troops besieged over 1,000 foreign diplomats and families seeking refuge in the Legation Quarter. The map belonged to Able Seaman Gabriel Edward Dennis of the New South Wales Naval Contingent, grandfather of donor Gordon Dennis. Handwritten annotation on the verso reads "For Tom with best love Gab". Tom was brother in law of Gabriel Edward Dennis.
