Water bottle : The Apex, Gallipoli
Damaged blue enamelled water bottle. The enamel has chipped off in several areas and the exposed metal is rusted and warped. There are two bullet or shrapnel holes in the back, as well as with four other holes, more likely caused by corrosion. There is a further bullet or shrapnel hole on the side of the water bottle, near the others.
Water bottle found at The Apex on 23 February 1919 by members of the Australian Historical Mission (AHM). The AHM, led by Official Historian C E W Bean, visited Gallipoli from February to March 1919 to collect items for the nation, to record the area through artworks and photographs, and to explore the battlefields to answer some of the 'riddles of Anzac' for the Australian official history of the war.
The Apex is a slight prominance on Rhododendron Ridge (aka Rhododendron Spur) about 457 metres from the summit of Chunuk Bair. It was occupied by New Zealand forces as part of the August Offensives.
