2879 (NX41139) Sergeant (Sgt) Richard Osborne 'Matey' McLaughlin DCM, of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF), his wife Elsie and their daughter Dale in a garden of their BCOF home in Japan. The McLaughlins are living in a traditional Japanese house rather than a purpose built BCOF dependant house. Sgt McLaughlin served as a forward scout, Kanga Force commando New Guinea in the Second World War, being awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for fearlessness and leadership at Balikpapan in 1945. Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) McLaughlin served with the Ist Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) in the Korean War, and made one visit to the Vietnam War. Dale McLaughlin died in Japan and is buried in the British Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, Yokohama.
