Description

Group portrait of six recruits. Identified, second from the left, is 3581 Private (Pte) William Joseph 'Plugger' Landy, 8th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion, of Geelong, Vic. Prior to enlisting in the AIF, Landy, a shop assistant, also served with the 70th Infantry, Citizens Military Forces. He embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Afric on 5 January 1916. Pte Landy was killed in action on 19 July 1916, at Fromelles, France, whilst serving with the 58th Battalion, aged 19 years.
