Description

Phillip Oliver Hobson, a civilian photographer and cinematographer employed by the Navy Office, films an RAN officer and sailors on a New York street. The film shoot is for an RAN documentary film titled 'New Ship' which covers the commissioning, training and delivery of HMAS Perth (II). Lieutenant George Unwin (far right, wearing a civilian suit), RAN Photographic Officer, is watching the proceedings. Following her commissioning at Boston, Massachusetts, HMAS Perth spent eight months in American waters conducting trials and exercises. On 12 February 1966 she sailed for Australia arriving at Perth on 4 March 1966. Phillip Hobson had previously been an Australian Army Public Relations photographer, serving in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Japan, the Korean War and the Malayan Emergency.
