Description

Post-operative recovery room at the civilian hospital at Bien Hoa. The severe lack of medical facilities and staff in Vietnam led the South Vietnamese Government to request urgent civilian medical aid through the USAID and SEATO programmes. Australia responded by sending a succession of surgical teams which operated out of several centres throughout the country. Elaine Glenn, who took this photograph, was one of a group of civilian nurses from Royal Adelaide Hospital. The civilian patients on stretchers are recovering from surgery, and upon regaining consciousness are returned to their ward.
