Description

Australian civilian nurses and Australian service personnel at a picnic lunch at Vung Tau. The severe lack of medical facilities and staff in Vietnam led the South Vietnamese Government to request urgent civilian medical aid through the USAID and SEATO programmes. Australia responded by sending a succession of surgical teams which operated out of several centres throughout the country. Elaine Glenn, who took this photograph, was one of a group of civilian nurses from Royal Adelaide Hospital. On this particular day the nurses had been flown from Bien Hoa to Vung Tau via helicopter for their day off, and were subsequently invited to share lunch.
