Description

Cone shaped megaphone made from a piece of aluminium sheet. A handle has been attached to the underside of the megaphone by four rivets. The mouth end is large enough to go around the mouth, and has an arch shaped dip to allow for the speaker's nose. Both opened ends of the megaphone have been neatly rolled back for comfort and to avoid cuts from the metal. Stamped on the front centre of the megaphone is an oval makers mark. It is partially illegible, but includes the date '1915' and the letters 'M&C' in the centre, surrounded by the text 'GRIFFITHS & ...WETT LTM'. The end of the megaphone is stamped '...9 R F'. The megaphone is coated with what appears to be grey paint, and scratched into that in large letters is 'B. SU'.

History / Summary

This megaphone was found at Shell Green, Gallipoli in January 1919, together with a periscope associated with the 2nd Field Company Engineers. It was found by Lieutenant William Hopkin James, who was working on Gallipoli, leading a small party from the Australian War Records Section, taking photographs and collecting items for the national collection.
