Periscope : Gallipoli
Damaged white metal box periscope. There is a rectangular opening at the bottom back of the periscope and another at the top front where the mirrors were located. The mirrored glass pieces are absent. The angled pieces of metal that held the lower mirror are in place, but the top section has been crushed. The periscope is corroded, and pierced with two bullet holes on the front of the scope
This periscope was collected on 5 March 1919 by members of the Australian Historical Mission (AHM). The AHM, led by Official Historian C E W Bean, visited Gallipoli from February to March 1919 to collect items for the nation, to record the area through artworks and photographs, and to explore the battlefields to answer some of the 'riddles of Anzac' for the Australian official history of the war.
