Improvised Dug Out sign, 'Ivy Lodge' : Walker's Ridge, Gallipoli
Description
Handmade rectangular tin sign of irregular shape. The words 'IVY / LODGE' have been produced by hammering a nail or centre punch to create perforations for the outlines of the letters. The sign has a dark patina. Nail holes where the sign was affixed to a wall are visible on the lower corners.
History / Summary
This sign was found by the Australian Historical Mission to Gallipoli on 5 March 1919, at a dugout that had been named 'Ivy Lodge' on Walker's Ridge.
Given the primitive nature of the dugouts in which the men lived, 'Ivy Lodge' was probably an attempt at humour, although the naming may have had a sentimental purpose. The sign was handmade from a flattened piece of kerosene or biscuit tin.
