39426 Private (Pte) Robert Grist (facing the camera) and 3791497 Pte Edward Hazen Farrands (right), both of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), at an airport awaiting their flight to Shoalwater Bay for their final training operation before embarking for Vietnam. At Vung Tau on 2 August 1968, Pte Grist died of wounds received when the armoured personnel carrier in which he was travelling, detonated a mine during Operation Platypus. He was 19 years old.
