Studio portrait of QX11305 Private (Pte) Reginald Joseph Valmadre, 2/26th Battalion, of Bowen, Qld. Pte Valmadre enlisted on 6 July 1940. When Singapore fell to the Japanese on 15 February 1942, just two days before his 21st birthday, Pte Valmadre and his fellow soldiers of the 2/26th Battalion were taken prisoners of war and were sent to Changi Prison. He then worked on the Burma-Thailand Railway until it was completed. Pte Valmodre died at sea on his way to Japan aboard Rakuyo Maru on 12 September 1944 when the ship was sunk by an American submarine.
