Description
During Operation Atherton, members of 1 Platoon, A Company, 8RAR, move out of the way a tree that has been chopped down to allow a dust-off helicopter to lower a harness chair known as a jungle penetrator through the jungle canopy so that two platoon casualties can be medically evacuated. On the previous day, six members of the platoon were wounded by a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) round fired by one of two Viet Cong soldiers who walked into a platoon ambush. The four men most seriously wounded were evacuated the same day. Operation Atherton, the battalion's first in Vietnam, is a reconnaissance and ambush operation in the northwest of the province.
