Description

A C130A Hercules transport aircraft (A97-209), of No 36 Squadron, RAAF, which is loading truckloads of humanitarian supplies on the runway at Tan Son Nhut airbase near Saigon. This aircraft was captained and piloted by 43754 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Brian Geoffrey Young, No 36 Squadron, RAAF. He and his crew made several humanitarian flights from Tan Son Nhut airbase to An Thoi refugee camp on Phu Quoc Island, 300 kilometres west of Saigon. Flt Lt Young noted that the runway at An Thoi was a narrow and slippery, perforated steel planking (PSP) runway only 3000 feet long, which is not very big for a heavily laden C130. The jet liner in the background is a Boeing 727.
