Portrait of 1617 Private (Pte) Herbert George Compton, 34th (and later 54th) Battalion, of West Maitland, NSW. Pte Compton enlisted in West Maitland on 29 February 1916 and embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 2 May 1916. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on 15 May 1917 aged 19.
