Hand made cribbage board : D A Johnston, 2/20 Battalion
Handmade wooden cribbage board with stepped upper and lower edges. An aluminium plate, also stepped, has been attached to the wood with steel pins. After attachment to the wood the plate has been punched, in an oval shape, with standard groups of holes for scoring pegs. Between the lines of holes is engraved 'MALAYA' and 'CHANGI'. The centre is engraved with a beach scene with rising sun, palm trees and 'NX68436 D.A. JOHNSTONE 2/20 BN'. The beach and the stepped edges of the plate are engraved in a fine zigzag pattern.
Associated with NX68436 D A Johnstone of 2/20 Battalion. The board was used by him in Changi while he was a prisoner of war of the Japanese. The aluminium came from a Japanese aircraft fragment, and the board appears to be the 'stepped' pattern that was frequently made by prisoners in Changi.
