Description

Informal portrait of three RAAF members aboard a ship in the Pacific en route for service in Europe. Identified left to right, 420618 Sergeant (Sgt) Neal Morton Gray; 420746 Sgt Clement Thistleton (Clem) Halpin; Sgt George Gould (possibly 414682 George Edward Gould). Sgt Gray of Mascot, NSW, enlisted on 8 November 1941, and on arrival in England was assigned to 11 Personnel Disposal and Reception Centre, RAF; he was killed by ground fire during a Luftwaffe bombing raid on 23 May 1943, aged 19. Sgt Halpin of Tweed Heads, NSW, enlisted on 9 November 1941 and was attached to 3 Squadron RAAF, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer (WO). WO Halpin was killed on operations over Pesaro, Italy, on 21 August 1944.
