Studio portrait of 64 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) George Harold Jakeman, B Company, 20 Battalion, of Woollahra, NSW (originally Kansas, USA). A tram driver prior to his enlistment , Private Jakeman embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Berrima (A35) on 25 June 1915. George saw active service at Gallipoli, where he took part in the offensive in which his brother 1034 Private Charles James Jakeman, 18th Battalion was killed in action. In 1916 Pte George Jakeman was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for bravery in the field at the Bridoux Salient, France. At the time he was serving with the Australian Army Medical Corps, attached to the 20th Battalion. On 13 April 1919 he returned to Australia in the 5th Field Ambulance with the rank of Lance Corporal.
