Telephone Set 'D' Mark V
Rectangular aluminum olive drab painted box with broad canvas webbing strap. The lid opens up to the rear and is held open by a thin metal bracket. The lower section of the box is divided by a wooden shelf near to its top which holds a Morse key at its centre and is flanked by an magneto bell to the left and a "buzzer" unit to the right. Below the shelf is where the black Bakelite ear piece and hand set are stored with their braided cables. The single ear piece is permanently attached to the underside of the shelf, where as the hand set has a large four prong plug which is disconnected when not in use. The inside of the lid has two large brass plates, both painted black with their lettering and diagrams visible in the natural brass. Attached to the top of the small battery box, behind the Morse key, is a small blackened brass identification plate with the inscription, 'D' broad arrow 'D', 'TELEPHONE SET "D" MK. V', 'SERIAL NO. 16892', 'MANUFACTURED BY', 'STANDARD TELEPHONES AND CABLES PTY. LTD.', 'SYDNEY', '1941'.
