Informal portrait VX42964 Private (Pte) Joseph John (Joe) Egan, of Allansford, Vic, (left) and VX42936 Sergeant (Sgt) Cyril Geoffrey (Geoff) Boyle, of Mepunga East, Vic (right). Both enlisted with the 2/23rd Battalion on 29 June 1940, and Pte Joe Egan was killed in action in Tobruk, Libya, on 17 May 1941, aged 24. Sgt Boyle was wounded in the same action at Tobruk on 17 May 1941 and later in El Alamein on 22 July 1942.
