Booth, Julie Maree (Corporal, b.1967)
Collection relating to the Operation Habitat service of F327123 Lance Corporal (later Corporal) Julie Maree Thomas (later Booth), 2 Field Ambulance, Australia, Turkey, Iraq and Cyprus, 1991.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Houses a diary, letters, papers and publications relating to the Operation Habitat service of Lance Corporal Thomas in northern Iraq in 1991. The diary, maintained by Thomas between 8 May and 19 June 1991, records preparations for deployment, her arrival in Turkey, her impressions of Incirlik Air Base, interactions with United States soldiers and operational briefings. She subsequently outlines operational activities in northern Iraq, describing medical assistance administered to Kurdish refugees and allied soldiers, damage to villages and towns, impressions of local people and customs, interactions with British soldiers, and her departure from Iraq and arrival in Cyprus for a period of leave. The collection also includes four letters from Thomas to her parents written during May and June 1991 (letters dated 26 May and 5 June are missing pages), which summarise her impressions and experiences throughout the deployment. Other items include loose leaf pages recording English to Kurdish translations, a facsimile map of northern Iraq, an autographed dinner menu for Major General R.J. Ross OBE, dated 10 May 1991, and a daily routine run sheet for the Australian contingent. The remaining items in the collection include extracts from press releases for Operation Habitat, two issues of 2nd Field Ambulance newsletter "Examiner", an "Orders for Opening Fire" instruction card issued to Operation Habitat personnel, and a "Operation Habitat 1991 Soldiers Handbook" issued by the Australian Defence Force (Army).
