Studio portrait of 2969 Private Alfred Penn, 5th Pioneer Battalion, of Newcastle, NSW. Son of Alfred Cornelius and E. Penn of Potters Bar, Middlesex, England. A clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney with the 4th Battalion aboard HMAT Argyllshire (A8) on 30 September 1915. He died of wounds on 9 December 1916 in France, aged 36. He is buried in Bernafay Wood British Cemetery, Montauban, France.
