Informal outdoor group portrait of members of the crew of RAN Boom Defence Vessel HMAS Karangi A304. Identified are: Warrant Officer and Commanding Officer Finn Sebastian Block, standing group, far left; F3717 AB William James (Bill) Reside, standing group, fourth from left; 14641 Stoker Petty Officer George Edward Benjamin ‘Pop’ Nalder, standing group, fifth from right; and PA/3466 Able Seaman (AB) Gordon Lawrence ‘Snow’ Seiboth, standing group, seventh from right. HMAS Karangi was built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard and commissioned on 23 December 1941. Karangi arrived in Darwin for Boom Defence service on 24 January 1942, and served alongside her sister ships HMAS Koala A315 and HMAS Kangaroo A291, and Net Class Boom Defence Vessel, HMAS Kookaburra A331. She was present during the Japanese large scale carrier borne air raid on Darwin on 19 February 1942, and during subsequent service in the area experienced numerous air raids but escaped damage.
