Informal portrait of two soldiers, both of the 2/4 Battalion. The name of the soldier on the left is unknown, but on the right is NX5849 Private (Pte) James John Ryan of Bondi, NSW, and Young, NSW, who enlisted on 24 October 1939 and served in the 2/4 Battalion. Pte Ryan was killed in action at Florina, Greece, on 4 April 1941, he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Athens Memorial.
