Soldiers of the 7th Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) work in the Operations Room ...
Soldiers of the 7th Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) work in the Operations Room at a base in the Mekong River Delta area, IV Corps Tactical Zone (IV CTZ), south west of Saigon. RAN Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV) is serving with the 135th Assault Helicopter Company (135th AHC), United States Army, providing tactical airlift and gunship support for Australian and allied ground forces. Due to its integrated nature, the unit is designated an ‘experimental military unit', with the nickname EMU. The 135th AHC spends more time with the 7th and 9th ARVN than with the 7th Infantry Division, United States Army Infantry. With the US 7th Infantry Division, rather than landing ten Iroquois helicopters with their troops into a prepared landing zone (LZ) , the flight splits into two groups of five aircraft, flying from one likely trouble spot to another. The helicopters land but do not let the troops out until they receive fire, at which point the troops disembark and the other flight moves in to assist. If both flights take fire simultaneously then support is difficult.
