Group portrait of soldiers, probably of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. Identified front row, first on left is 609 Sapper (Spr) Wilfred 'Tom' Baker, 3rd Signal Troop, 3rd Light Horse Brigade. A labourer from Victoria in civilian life, Spr Baker enlisted on 19 October 1914, passing the medical test even though he had a recent perforation injury causing vision problems with his right eye. Spr Baker embarked from Melbourne, Victoria aboard HMAT Chilka (A51) on 1 February 1915 and served at Gallipoli, Egypt and the Middle East. His sight caused him problems however he continued serving and returned to Australia with the 3rd Signal Troop Engineers on 10 July 1919. On 2 October 1939 he enlisted with the service number V80152 and served as a Sergeant at the Murchison Prisoner of War Camp, Tatura, Victoria.
