Informal portrait of NX178578 Sergeant (Sgt) John Edward Wonson, 8th Port Operating Company, of Bexley, NSW. Wonson enlisted in the Second World War on 2 March 1944 and was discharged on 20 December 1945. Prior to this, he enlisted for service twice in the First World War, both times claiming to be 19 years of age, when he was actually 15. He initially enlisted in the Light Horse on 11 April 1917 and was discharged on 2 May 1917. He re-enlisted on 21 September 1917 and served as 3762 Private with the 56th Battalion, and embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Euripides on 31st October 1917. It was discovered in England that he was underage, and he returned to Australia on 9 May 1918 and discharged.
