Trench art aircraft ashtray : Private J C O'Shea, 17 Australian Works Company
Brass trench art aircraft ashtray. The base is made from a cutdown 37mm Japanese shell case. Attached to the primer tube is a model of a Japanese aircraft made from a 50 calibre cartridge, 6.5mm Japanese projectile and several pieces of scrap brass. Two grooves have been made in the rim of the base for resting cigarettes.
Brass trench art aircraft ashtray made from Japanese shell cases by V126022 Private John Charles O'Shea during his service in New Guinea. O'Shea, born on 12 September 1908 in Bairnsdale, Victoria, enlisted in the Militia on 26 May 1941and joined 22 Battalion. In September 1944 he was transferred to 17 Australian Works Company and served in New New Guinea from 14 October to 26 October 1945. O'Shea was discharged fron 14 Australian Works Company on 19 February 1946.
