Outdoor group portrait of group of soldiers in their sporting kit, crossed sticks used for bayonet training and protective gear in front of them. Identified right foreground, seated on the ground, is 2165 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Joseph 'Joss' Miller Stubbs, 34th Battalion, who was killed in action on 31 March 1918 in France. L Cpl Stubbs embarked from Australia with the 3rd Reinforcements on 24 August 1916. After arrival in England he undertook further training before proceeding overseas to France. He was admitted to hospital suffering shell shock in March, June and July before returning to England to undergo other training. The shell shock was then reported as neurasthenia. He rejoined his unit on 9 March 1918. Just over three weeks later he was killed in action near Cachy, France, aged 31.
