Description
Studio portrait of 3024 Private (Pte) Edward Victor Coxon Brittain, 19th Battalion. Pte Coxon, a metal moulder or iron monger from Numurkah, Victoria, enlisted at Holdsworthy NSW on 10 August 1915. He embarked with the 7th reinforcements to the 19th Battalion aboard board HMAT A29 Suevic from Sydney on 20 December 1915. Pte Brittain was transferred to the 4th Battalion at Alexandria, Egypt, on 14 February 1916 and was killed in action on 17 August 1916 serving with this unit on the Western Front in France. Aged 23 when killed he has no known grave and is commemorated at the Australian National Memorial, Villers Bretonneux, France.
