The rear view of a Landing Vehicle Tracked 4 (LVT4) with lowered ramp and some unidentified Australian Army personnel standing in the cargo bay. Originally conceived as a rescue vehicle for use in the Florida Everglades, by the inventor and engineer Donald Roebling (the grandson of Mr and Mrs John A Roebling, designers of the Brooklyn Bridge), these versatile amphibians could be deployed from parent ships and came ashore using their tracks for propulsion. Once landed, they could be driven as a conventional tracked carrier. The LVT4 could carry personnel, stores and light vehicles such as Jeeps and trailers. Sometimes called a Buffalo, Alligator or Amtrack, 8,348 LVT4s were manufactured between 1943 and 1945 by the FMC, Graham Paige and the St Louis Car Company.
