Description
Oral memoir recorded by Laurence Henry Smith relating to his family history and service as a Lieutenant in the Light Horse and later the Australian Flying Corps during the First World War and as a Captain in army recruitment during the Second World War. Interview includes the following recollections : Migration from Wales (UK) to Victoria - enlisted at Liverpool - travelling on board ship with the horses to Cairo - ambushing Germans on patrol near Romani - taking a dead German officer's boots - anecdotes from Beersheba - playing piano while shells fall - leaving Light Horse to enlist as an air pilot - being shot down by Germans and taken captive - befriending German officers and being allowed into town - suffering from dysentry - hospital ship to Alexandria - return to Australia.
