Informal portrait of 2596 Lance Corporal Leslie (Les) Garling, 13th Battalion. A bank clerk, of Camden, NSW, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Runic on 9 August 1915. In January 1916 he was promoted to corporal then in March 1916 to sergeant and immediately to second lieutenant and taken on strength of the 45th Battalion. On 18 August 1916 he was promoted to lieutenant (lt) in the field. On 7 June 1917 at Messines, Lt Garling was reported missing, killed in action and this was confirmed by fellow members of the unit when eye witness accounts were sought. He was aged 35 years.
