Victory Medal : Private F A Tyers, 21 Battalion AIF
Victory Medal. Impressed around edge with recipient's details.
Victory Medal associated with the service of 5705 Private Frederick Albert Tyers, a twenty one year old share farmer from Victoria who enlisted on 1 August 1916 and was assigned to the 15th reinforcements for 21 Battalion, AIF. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Shropshire on 25 September 1916, arriving at Plymouth on 9 November. On 9 October 1917 he was wounded with some other members of 21 Battalion during the advance that captured Broodseinde Ridge, east of Ypres in Belgium. The men, who were able to walk, were last seen making their way back to a dressing station, but they never arrived. No trace of their bodies were found at the time and their names did not appear as prisoners of war. On 7 February 1918 a court of inquiry found that Tyers and his companions had probably been killed by heavy shell fire in the area. After the war his body was located and he was buried at Buttes New British Cemetery near Polygon Wood in Belgium.
