Studio portrait of 3884 Private (Pte) Walter Edgar Bulmer, 1st Battalion. An apprentice orchardist of Carlton, New South Wales, prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard RMS Mooltan on 11 December 1915 for Egypt. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during March 1916. Pte Bulmer was killed in action at Pozieres, France, on 22 August 1916. He was aged 19 years. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. His older brother 166 Sergeant Robert Henry Bulmer was killed in action at Gallipoli on 16 July 1915 (see C00816) and his younger brother served with the 17th Battalion and returned to Australia on 17 July 1919.
