Studio portrait of 5421 Private Thomas William Bernard Matthews, 4th (later 56th) Battalion of Turramurra, NSW. Son of John Thomas and Caroline Matthews. A grocer's assistant prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 14 April 1916. He was killed in action on 2 April 1917 in France, aged 20. He has no known grave, and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
