Studio portrait of 3244 Private Joseph Lawrence Stone 19th (later 4th) Battalion of Alexandria, NSW. Son of Albert Eagles Stone, and Catherine Stone. A horse-driver prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Suevic (A29) on 30 December 1915. He was killed in action on 23 July 1916 near Pozieres, France, aged 28. He was buried in the vicinity of Pozieres. Post war, his grave was not found and he is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
