Studio portrait of 2886 Private William Stewart Scott 9th (later 49th) Battalion of Hendra, Qld. Son of William Stewart Scott and Jean Scott; husband of Marion Scott. He saw service with the Navy as part of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) in New Guinea prior to enlisting. He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ayrshire (A33) on 1 September 1915. He was killed in action on 3 September 1916 near Pozieres, France, aged 33. He has no known grave, and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
