Studio portrait of 3481A Private John Stephen Carey 17th (later 53rd) Battalion of Macleay River, NSW. Son of Patrick and Bridget Carey. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 20 December 1915. He was killed in action on 19 July 1916 in France, aged 33. He is buried in Rue-Du-Bois Military Cemetery Fleurbaix, France. He is the brother of 3480A Private Timothy Joseph Carey who was killed on the same day.
