Studio portrait of 1156 Private (later Corporal) Thomas William Cawley 19th (later 5th Light Trench Mortar Battery, Australian Field Artillery ) Battalion of Woollahra, NSW. Son of Thomas Peter Cawley and the late Elizabeth Cawley. A farmer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 25 June 1915. He was killed in action on 28 July 1916 in France, aged 22. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
