Studio portrait of 3756 Sapper Francis Walter Newell, 7th Field Company Engineers, of Stanmore, NSW. Son of Richard and Catherine Newell, of Newtown, NSW. A bricklayer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 30 November 1915. He died of wounds, received in action, on 29 July 1916 in France, aged 24. He is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, France.
